Chickens in China – Beijing

I recently was lucky enough to go to Asia for work. Most of my photography was for blogs about that work trip but I managed to squeeze in a couple of chicken photos among the events.

We were speeding along corporate hallways to our Silicon Valley Bank event when I saw the above Sheepish Chicken painting. Next to it was the only example of square chickens I have seen to date:

It was driving around Beijing I think that we saw the stacked chicken cages truck, tooling along the road with sadly bawking chickens in it. A chicken’s life in China is not any more pleasant than in the US and I will say that at one restaurant we were given deep fried head of chicken, which only one of our party had the wherewithal to eat.

But even if the chicken’s lot is sad, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t dominate on the art and culture front.

The Ballad of Bossy Chicken

I was woken in the twilight of 6 AM a few Sundays back by what sounded like a really annoyed chicken.  It wasn’t that “BAWWWK BAWK BAWK BAWK BAWK BAWWWWWWWWWWWWWK” noise that means “I’m out of food you lazy bastard, get out here”, more of a concerned sustained crooning.

I figured fine, you woke me up, I might as well get out of bed and check.  I go outside to find Bossy standing in the middle of the coop, doing the sustained bawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwk thing.  It’s still too dark to see anything, so I have no idea what she wants.  Food?  Water?  She has both.  She can’t really be upset already that I haven’t moved the coop today.  Then, I notice something off to the side.

A HORRIBLE EVIL RACCOON.  Noooo, stay away from my chickens!  The little (ok, size of a large dog) monster just sat there staring at me for a good 2 minutes.  It was even sitting on its front paws like cats do.

I don’t really have anything to throw at it, and it might have rabies, so I kind of just made “aaaaugh go away you bastard leave my chickens alone” noises at it.  It slinked across the street and ran under a car.  Chickens defended!  There was another one around the side of the house eating god knows what.  I swear, how do they get so fat in the city?

Bossy is one brave chicken.

Policeman chicken

Remember those days in Oblivion, where if you (like me) f-ed up the transaction between self and storekeeper, or just simply went klepto and took something?

….and somehow the City Guard always knew and were waiting for you outside the door?

Well now you have to watch yourself among the NPC fowl. At least, in the beta version of this game (which the author hopes the mod community will bring back).

Check your shoes carefully….

I went out to give the last of my microwave bowl of popcorn (note: no addititves, it’s a great device that just pops kernels you’d use on a stovetop) to the chickens. As I picked my way around the yard, defiantly wearing Birkenstocks despite the chill, I realized that the summer dry spell had turned the grass yellow-brown – and there were darker spots on the landscape to avoid.

We are luckier than Snohomish County apparently, residents of which found out that that Odd Smell wasn’t the sewage plant run amok, but in fact chicken poop. That all happened in September.

A bit later that month, another fowl-smelling incident occurred in Orlando Florida – but in this case its human-caused. A large truck hauling 35,000 pounds of frozen chicken meat overturned on the Florida turnpike.

And finally to top it all off, British reality television has assigned a “chicken-themed endurance task” that propelled one housemate – Harry Blake – into triumph.  They even had to eat chicken feed and sit on eggs.

The world is a weird place. Check your shoes carefully!

Gritty New York City’s Chicken Bar

NewYork_Chicken_Bar
I did not get a chance to eat at the Chicken Bar, but there’s no way you can say that Chicken Bar character is “chicken.” Too bold and brassy by half…(also loved the strange grafitti behind him)….
